A general measurement and fit guide for shopping Dotti Barrios. Learn what to measure, compare units and choose with more confidence.

Start with measurements, not just a size label

This guide explains measuring across the store. It does not assign one set of measurements to every XS, S, M or L: fit and sizing differ between garments. Use your measurements with the size information for the item you want.

How to measure your body

Use a flexible measuring tape. Stand naturally and keep the tape level and comfortably close without pulling it tight. Follow any specific instructions supplied with the garment’s size information.

General body measurement reference
Measurement Where to measure
Chest / bust Measure around the fullest part, keeping the tape level across your back.
Natural waist Measure around your natural waist without holding your breath or tightening the tape.
Hips Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, with your feet together.
Height Measure from the top of your head to the floor while standing straight without shoes.
Inseam Follow the item’s instructions for the start and end points; trouser length and body inseam are not always the same measurement.

Inches & centimetres

Use the same unit when comparing measurements. One inch equals 2.54 centimetres. The table below converts measurements only; it does not assign clothing sizes.

Body measurements vs. garment measurements

Body measurements are taken around or along your body. Garment measurements describe the clothing itself, such as its width or length. A flat garment width is not the same as body circumference.

If a chart provides flat garment measurements, follow its diagram and compare with a similar garment you already own and like the fit of.

Understand the fit

Fitted, regular, relaxed and oversized describe different silhouettes. Check the garment’s fit description and measurements rather than automatically choosing a larger or smaller size.

Unisex does not mean every garment shares the same sizing. For children’s clothing, compare the stated measurements and height guidance instead of relying on age alone.

Between sizes? Consider your preferred fit and ask for help interpreting the item’s measurements before ordering.
